Food, Glorious Food
For this wonderful Saturday stretching out before us, how about trying a new food?
Have you been eyeing those strange and tempting fruits or vegetables in the
grocery? Feeling like if you eat one more boring, yet tasty apple you'll just go crazy? Everyone needs something new now and then, so why not something easy like a new food!
Do you even like trying new foods? Think about it for a bit. What is holding you back? Have you always been this way, did you learn it from your mom, or is it a new thing? How about the rest of your family, are they adventurous eaters, or are they reluctant?
I know I have always liked to try new food (thanks mom and dad!), and since I do the food shopping, I've trained my boys and husband to enjoy trying new stuff. They are usually pretty enthusiastic about giving something new at least one try. We have the "no thank you bite" rule in our house, which has worked much better for us than the "clean your plate or else" rule. . I have to admit that I am proud of myself for instilling this in my children! They surprise other people with their fearless palates, and are sad for people who don't even like vegetables.
But sometimes I get in a rut, but then a new colour or texture in the produce section at the store will catch my eye. Then is when I have that debate with myself (hopefully without talking out loud to myself in the store!),
What if it I don't like it, or it tastes funny, it sure is pricey, I don't want to waste the money, how do I cook it, it is easier to just buy bananas.
It is soooooo easy to talk yourself out of trying something new!
How about having a new conversation with yourself? Try this for starters:
Wow, that starfruit really is a beautiful colour. I wonder if it tastes as good as that colour looks? It might be yucky. I'll just buy one small one and give it a go. But wait, do I eat the whole thing or have to cook it? You have the good ol' internet at home silly, look it up when you get home! Ok, into the basket it goes.
I'd love to hear what new food you try today!
Hope your Saturday is adventurous!
Damn, it figures I would read this immediately AFTER I got back from the grocery store. If I'd read it first, I'd have probably bought that UglyFruit (sp??) I picked up and then put back down because I didn't know what I'd do with it. Maybe I can do this later in the week.
